Great Cook Books To Read In 2018

We hope you are enjoying 2018 so far! As January comes to a close we wanted to share some awesome cook books that would be great to read this year. At first we were going to write it ourselves. However, our team decided we wanted to reach out to some amazing bloggers across the interwebs and see what they had to say about cooks books So here is a list of some cook books and bloggers we think you should check out!

JULIANNE GABERT  EIC of Girls on Food, waitress turned food blogger
Her Blog : Girls On Food

A quick About Me About Her Blog:  She was raised in the suburbs of Sacramento, California. Where she grew up as a “McDonald’s kid”. She was very picky about what she ate and refused to try new foods. Her mom started taking her on trips to Europe when she was a teenager and that’s when her palate for finer foods began to develop. Some of her favorite meals are…(Check out her blog to find out what!)

Her Book of Choice In 2017 LA Son: Cookbook-wise, I discovered Roy Choi’s LA Son from a public appearance of his at the opening of Kogi Taqueria in El Segundo this year. Not only is it full of his fantastic recipes, but he opens up about growing up in Los Angeles and the ups and downs of the restaurant industry. A cookbook full of delicious recipes is one thing. Getting to know the chef on such a personal level and knowing the journey to create those recipes makes them even more delicious.

Julie Menghini

Her Blog: Hostess At Heart
A quick About Me About Her Blog Secret-Layer” Cakes : Her food blog is for people who like recipes that are delicious, use simple ingredients and are easy to prepare.  She uses ingredients that are in season or readily available

Her Book of Choice In 2017: As a food blogger I’m always looking for inspiration and any opportunity to support my community.  I purchased a new baking cookbook called Secret-Layer” Cakes from baker extraordinaire Dini Kodippili from The Flavor Bender The book and it’s pages are high quality. It lays flat and the pages wipe clean.  The photography is just beautiful, and the recipe instructions in this book are easy to follow I believe that this book would appeal to a new or experienced baker.  I also believe that the recipe in this almost 200 page book are unique and would be a show-stopper for anyone lucky enough to be the recipient of one of these cakes

Melissa

Her Blog: The Olive Blogger
A quick About Me About Her Blog: Melissa is an everyday girl from the GTA (that’s in Canada eh!) just looking to help bring some tastiness to other peoples lives! She enjoys baking, cooking and anything that involves her eating

Her Book of Choice In 2017: Alton Brown Good Eats: The Middle Years This hands down this has to be my favourite cookbook ever printed! Alton Brown is a culinary genius and this book offers so many must know tips and tricks to making classic dishes and treats. He offers up his own sense of culinary humour and experiences with each recipe, keeping it light and fun for anyone kitchen cook…in fact, this book taught me how to make a proper Risotto!! It was one dish I Was terrified to even attempt… I always pictured Gordon Ramsey yelling profanities at chefs on Hell’s Kitchen and thought “oh my God, if a professional chef has trouble making risotto how on earth am I (a food blogger!) going to make it?!” Enter Good Eats: The Middle Years, where AB explains step-by-step how to make a risotto (And so many other amazing dishes like: polenta and pumpkin seed brittle) I now make my own variations on his classic risotto, like my Butternut Squash Risotto , which has become a family and reader favourite! Simply put, it is a cookbook everyone needs because it provides so much more than the recipe. It gives you the information as to “why” certain ingredients work well together and tips and tricks to make it perfect every time. A great book for the advanced chef as well as those just starting out!

Maryam
Her Blog: The Persian Fusion
A quick About Me About Her Blog: Maryam is a political analyst by day and food aficionado by night. On her blog she shares  Persian recipes as well as some of her other favorites including cakes and pastries

Her Book of Choice In 2017 The Legendary Cuisine of Persia: My choice of the cookbook for 2017 is the new edition of Margaret Shaida’s “The Legendary Cuisine of Persia” originally published in 2000. Being a Persian cook and food writer myself I know and cook many Persian recipes but Shaida’s pioneer work is so full of historical and cultural context that even as an Iranian I immensely enjoyed reading it cover to cover. I also found a few recipes, undoubtedly family recipes, that I had not seen before. Margarette Shaida, an English woman, married an Iranian and lived and worked in Iran for many years. When she wrote her colossal Persian cookbook there were less than a handful available in English. Shaida shows a deep love for the culture and cuisine of Iran throughout her book and has beautiful recipes that I’m sure any novice cook can follow to create beautiful authentic dishes. Unlike some other Persian cookbooks in English her recipes cover just about every type of food eaten in Iran including pickles (an integral part of the Persian diet) and traditional desserts and sweets such as Saffron Rice Pudding and Marzipan Mulberries as well as western pastries such as Tiny Cream Buns that over many years have been modified to suit the palate of Iranians
